Motorola Milestone gets 2.1, US users still waiting for Verizon…
Europe users of the Motorola Milestone (Droid) are starting to get OTA updates for the new version of the popular open-source phone OS, Android 2.1. While US users are still waiting on their carrier Verizon to push the update out, the latest rumours say this week…
This update brings many enhancements including live wallpapers, 5 home screens, voice control, integrated facebook (which finally integrates with your contacts list), a slightly updated dock interface as well as one tuned for use in the car, and many performance upgrades. Although this does not include the 3D app drawer that seems to be exclusive to the Nexus One, which does not exactly help the fragmentation of the Android platform. I do wish google would allow all features on all devices, and apparently in the next version ‘Froyo’ the OS will be split into apps that can be individually downloaded through the market. This should help, as it would allow any phone to update any individual part of android at will, well theoretically at least.
Anyone who wants the full Nexus One experience, try installing the Helix Launcher app, it gives you the 3D launcher with a very small performance hit. Although it is limited to 3 home screens.
