  • Microsoft finally picking up the pace with IE9

Microsoft seem to have finally gotten the idea of a fast stable standards compliant browser, and have begun a major overhaul for IE9.

Earlier versions of Internet Explorer, still the world’s most popular browser, have been very slow compared to others, especially with javascript performance. Microsoft seem to have realised that they can’t keep it up, with their fast dropping market share. They are looking to address the performance by optimising the areas of the browser that cause major bottlenecks and performance hits. Also the DirectX APIs are being altered to allow the graphics card to speed up rendering speeds, now this sounds like a really good idea, I’m surprised nobody’s tried it before. This should also allow better font smoothing, antialiasing and general look of sites.

Website designers have always been frustrated with IE, having to use various hacks to implement functionality common in other browsers. Now Microsoft is determined to change this, it would seem they’re planning on using the Acid3 test as a benchmark, as well as attempting to support all of the new CSS3 selectors. Oh and they seem to support rounder corners, yay! Just box shadows now that they need to get, from a practical perspective at least.
